Total Fitness Altrincham Review

Total Fitness Leisure Clubs consist of numerous gyms across the North of England, 17 to be precise.

I visited Total Fitness in Altrincham, Cheshire for approximately one year. It’s located opposite the cinema and Franky & Benny’s on Denmark Street.

First thing I loved about this gym is the indoor car park underneath the centre which is free to use anytime, all you do when you leave the club is put the parking ticket through the machine to get it stamped and off you go.

Near the entrance is a Cafe and Snack bar which can be good for relaxing before and after a gym session however it’s not exactly ‘cheap’ a protein shake can cost up to £4.00, as you can imagine getting one of these each time you go would be quite expensive!

Each Total Fitness Centre has a 25m indoor swimming pool as well as a family pool and a hydrotherapy spa pool to relax and unwind after training. The 25m pool is overlooked by the main gym above through huge glass windows.

The club has a decent size free-weight section complete with all the necessary equipment like barbells, dumbbells, bench presses (incline, flat and decline) and much more. Behind the free-weight section are the resistance and cardiovascular machines, Total Fitness boasts that every club has over 250 of these machines available to use; this is an attempt to cut out queues at peak times.

Although after going for a while, I experienced that at peak times this club gets very busy, I found myself doing an awful lot of nothing waiting for machines to be finished with. Some of the equipment is due a replacement for example; some of the head rests have ripped, the grips on some of the resistance machines are nearly coming off in your hand.

I don’t like to be so negative but another problem is on the free-weight section, some of the bench presses are so close to the other equipment around them, it’s an accident waiting to happen. The seated row is often broken and can sometimes take up to two weeks  to get fixed, as well as other damaged equipment.

On a positive note the cardio section is impressive complete with TV screens and many treadmills, cross-trainers and stepping machines etc.

If your thirsty there is plenty of cold water fountains dotted around the gym too.

Overall its a decent gym however there is plenty of room for improvement.

    Hi,

I’m definitely going to have to agree with you here! I attended a session as a trial once and immediately disliked the atmosphere!
